WHAT IS THE PAC?

All parents and guardians of children enrolled at Nootka Elementary School are automatically members of the Parent Advisory Council (PAC).

The PAC serves as the collective voice for Nootka families. We work collaboratively with the school administration, teachers, and staff to promote student well-being, and build a welcoming, inclusive school culture. Under the BC School Act, the PAC acts as an independent advisory body, ensuring parents have a meaningful partnership in their children’s learning journey.

WHAT WE DO

The PAC plans activities, coordinates programs, and manages an independent budget dedicated entirely to enriching the school experience for Nootka students. Our core focus areas include:

  • Building Community: Organizing fun events and activities that bring our students and families together.
  • Facilitating Communication: Ensuring an open channel between parents and school leadership to share feedback, discuss school initiatives, and stay informed.
  • Enriching Student Experiences: Financing extra initiatives that fall outside the school district’s budget. These can include things such as field trips, arts and recreational activities or equipment, guest speakers or performers, and technology.

WHAT DO PAC FUNDS SUPPORT?

Every year, our administration and teachers work together to share their upcoming needs with the PAC. Through community donations, fundraisers, and the BC Government Gaming Grant (which provides funding per student), we help bridge the gap.

PAC funds support things like:

  • Technology upgrades and classroom learning resources
  • Outdoor play and gym equipment
  • Field trips
  • School-wide educational presentations, performances, and workshops

HOW THE PAC WORKS

Every year at the AGM, parents elect an Executive Team to manage day-to-day operations, track finances, and draft a budget. However, important decisions—including how PAC funds are spent and what programs are introduced—are voted on by the parents who attend our meetings.

We meet once a month throughout the school year. These meetings are a fantastic opportunity to hear directly from the principal, stay updated on school news, meet other parents, and actively shape our school environment.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

Our community relies entirely on Nootka’s amazing parent body. You don’t need to hold an official title to make a massive impact. Here is how you can jump in:

  1. Attend a Meeting: Show up to vote, listen, and share your ideas.
  2. Stay Informed: Sign up for our PAC email newsletter and follow our community social channels to receive updates on hot lunch, fundraising, events, and more.
  3. Volunteer Your Time: Keep an eye out for short-term volunteer calls. Whether you can give one hour at a hot lunch shift, join an event committee, or help set up a school event, we truly cannot do it without you!
